Profile
Nestled in the heart of East Austin on East 11th Street, Hillside Farmacy is housed in a beautifully restored historical landmark. The building dates back to the 1920s when it was home to Doc Young’s Drugstore, one of the few African American-owned and operated pharmacies of its time.
Over the years, the space transformed into various businesses, including a barber shop, a bookstore, and Gene’s Po Boys. By the time the Hillside Farmacy team lovingly restored it in 2011, only a small piece of the original drugstore cabinetry remained behind the bar. Since reopening, it has garnered recognition, including an award from Preservation Austin in 2012 and a Texas Historical Landmark designation in 2019. Remarkably, the building is still owned by Doc Young’s family.
Today, Hillside Farmacy serves a different kind of remedy: fresh, locally sourced food. Committed to the farm-to-table ethos, the menu features seasonal ingredients, Texas wildflower honey, locally roasted coffee, and proteins from Texas ranchers and the Gulf, making it a beloved spot for both its history and its cuisine.
