Dante has been a cornerstone of Greenwich Village since its opening in 1915. Now recognized as a New York City landmark, this humble gathering spot has long drawn a diverse crowd, from celebrated actors, writers, and musicians to members of the beatnik generation seeking refuge in its welcoming and unassuming atmosphere.
The original Caffe Dante opened on Macdougal Street in 1915, in what was then the “South Village,” a predominantly Italian neighborhood. It served as a hub for Italian immigrants, who would gather over espresso to discuss home, politics, and community. A century later, in 2015, the Flotta family passed the torch to a New York-based Australian family, who embraced the cafe’s Italian heritage while incorporating global flavors beloved by modern New Yorkers.
Today, Dante preserves its historical charm and community spirit, now enhanced by a refined menu of contemporary Italian dishes, expertly crafted cocktails, and an award-winning bar program.
