Profile
One of Detroit’s top cocktail establishments, Lost River features Michigan’s largest assortment of rum. The former neighborhood pub Memories Jazz & Blues Lounge was acquired by Matt Mergener and Karen Green in the fall of last year. They kept some of the original features of the place while also adding more tropical touches like bamboo, thatch, and netting to the walls. As a nod to Memories and the Village Idiot, features like the mirrored rear bar and penny bar top are there. To further personalize the 40-seat pub, the partners also employed designers and local artists.
The unique drinking utensils are one of the greatest aspects of a tiki drinking experience, and Lost River is no exception. When creating the menu, Lost River drew inspiration from traditional tiki bar recipes while also giving the beverages their own unique twist. The bar also serves spirit-free drinks like the Coconut Proof, made with coconut cream, black tea, lemon, hibiscus, and vanilla. The Saddle Up, Sea Pony is also famous for its recipe containing guava, orange, passion fruit, lemon, orgeat, and molasses syrup.
The Lost River offers housemade rosemary-infused gin and tonic in a small bathtub glass as a tribute to Karen’s family roots. During Prohibition, Green’s great-grandmother produced gin and whiskey in a bathtub while raising her children and living in the Delray neighborhood. Along with two beers on tap, boilermakers, and eventually frozen alcoholic slushies, Lost River will also serve these beverages.
